Kenny Smith, a 35-year-old professional arm wrestler from Severna Park, Maryland, is preparing for an exciting showdown at the upcoming World Armwrestling League (WAL) event, WAL402, taking place this Thursday at Rams Head Live in Baltimore. Smith, who competes in the light heavyweight division, boasts impressive rankings, holding the No. 3 spot in North America left-handed and No. 4 right-handed.
Training out of Old Line CrossFit in Millersville, Smith emphasizes the intensity and professionalism of WAL events, which are far from casual competitions. "You have announcers. You have qualified referees. It’s a totally different atmosphere," he explains, highlighting the structured environment that elevates the sport.
Fans attending the event can expect a thrilling experience as top athletes clash in a contest of strength and strategy. Smith notes that the atmosphere is electric, with spectators having the opportunity to witness the action up close. "When these two guys go against each other, the intensity, the adrenaline to see the two arms collide, everybody can appreciate it in that atmosphere," he adds.
The WAL follows a set of five main rules for professional arm wrestling: competitors must keep their dominant elbow on the pad, place their non-dominant hand on a peg, maintain at least one foot on the floor, position their shoulders above the table, and lock their wrists while keeping them square before starting the match.
Smith also points out the growing popularity of arm wrestling in Maryland, noting the unique setup of the WAL events, where fans surround the table for an immersive viewing experience. With the best athletes in the world set to compete in Baltimore, anticipation is high for the event. The main highlight will be a heavyweight bout between Jerry Cadorette and Devon Larratt, who will battle for the number one spot in the world. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m., promising an evening filled with thrilling arm wrestling action.
