At the Berea Recreation Center, the Cleveland Armwrestling Club has transformed from a small gathering of five enthusiasts into one of Northeast Ohio's most prominent arm wrestling organizations. Founded in 2020 by Kevin Palko, the club now boasts over 30 regular participants, reflecting the sport's growing popularity and accessibility.

Palko, a former high school wrestler, discovered arm wrestling in 2014 and began the club after his previous team disbanded. The club initially faced challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited attendance. However, Palko's success at the Arnold Classic Arm-Wrestling Championship in 2021 helped boost interest, and he followed up with another national title in 2022. Currently, he is ranked fourth in the nation within his 154-pound weight class.

One of the key attractions of arm wrestling is its accessibility; it welcomes participants from various backgrounds and age groups. As Palko describes, it is "the sport for the common man," allowing anyone to compete, regardless of their athletic history. This sentiment is echoed by co-captain Rich Calero, who emphasizes that arm wrestling does not require expensive equipment or specialized training, making it approachable for all.

The club meets every Saturday and Wednesday for practice, focusing heavily on table time where members can practice techniques such as the top-roll and hook. Competitors have opportunities to participate in local tournaments almost every weekend, with events like the King of Cleveland Tournament and the Michigan State Tournament offering significant prizes and recognition.

In addition to its competitive spirit, the Cleveland Armwrestling Club fosters a strong sense of community. Palko notes that while many members participate for fun, a small percentage are serious competitors aiming for national rankings. The club's inclusive atmosphere has also attracted more women, with members like Megann Galehouse, who transitioned from powerlifting to arm wrestling and has already earned a spot in the upcoming 2026 World Armwrestling Championship in India.

Safety is a priority at the club, especially for newcomers. Palko insists that experienced members mentor beginners to minimize injury risks. The club emphasizes proper training techniques and sportsmanship, ensuring a supportive environment for all participants.
